TEHRAN. Saffron suppliers in Iran are losing more than 15% of added value in the export market at present. Issue is that saffron is sold in too large packages, which other countries repack and market much more successfully for consumers. Saffron: production is at risk

TEHRAN. Although saffron is the most valuable agri product Iran has, farmers lack incentive to grow the spice. Issue is that saffron prices have remained fixed in the domestic market in recent years, whereas the prices for most other goods have risen. Drought, low farmgate prices and very high production costs are even expected to put a stop to production in Iran.

Saffron: heading towards disaster

Saffron: knockdown prices in Iran

TEHRAN. Although Iran’s saffron exports were only nominally down in terms of volume in May compared with last year, the export value has slumped by 52%. This sharp decline is driven by the depreciation of the Iranian rial against the US dollar. May certainly illustrates a large discrepancy. While saffron is traded as the world’s most expensive spice in the international retail market, suppliers in Iran are selling at give-away prices.

Cumin: yields differ in Iran

TEHRAN. Cumin requires little water and is highly attractive for farmers in Iran. Not only do the plants increase water productivity but farmgate prices are relatively firm and enable farmers to sell at reasonable prices. Things are, however, different in the export market. Harvesting started in May with varying yields throughout the different provinces.

Saffron: traders feel let down by OPEC-style ambitions

TEHRAN. Iran has been promoting an OPEC-style Organization of Saffron Exporting Countries (OSEC) for some time now. Issue is that although Iran produces more than 92% of global market supplies, farmers and exporters lose out on profits. Traders are, however, dismissive of the high-flying notion that such an organization will enable Iran to launch a cartel and set market prices. Concern is that political ambitions may have the opposite effect.

Saffron: spice is not expensive enough

TEHRAN. Although Iran’s saffron production has risen continuously in recent years and international demand is booming, the market should witness a turn this year. Problem is a mismatch in pricing. While prices have declined in the international market over the last two years, prices in the domestic market have remained firm and production costs have risen drastically. This results in the bizarre situation that while saffron is an absolute trend product in the international market, the farmers are lacking incentive to cultivate the spice.

Cumin: India loses market shares to Iran

TEHRAN. Competitive prices have prompted a sharp rise in green cumin exports in Iran. As average export prices are 30% down suppliers can easily compete with their colleagues in India. Much will, however, depend on political developments in the next few months as the lifting of US sanctions and the return of the US to the nuclear deal are crucial to exports.

Saffron: illegal smuggling is not the only problem

TEHRAN. Although Iran successfully stepped up saffron exports, much is left to be desired. Exports hit more than 322 mt in March 2020 through to March 2021, despite the sanctions. Performance may have, however, been much better. Suppliers emphasise that illegal smuggling activities are not the only problem, but that packaging is key to drive up sales.
