BRUSSELS. So much for the traditional sales market being dead in Europe. The new grind statistics for the first quarter in Europe has produced a small sensation.

At least at first glance. With 339,379 mt, according to the European Cocoa Association (ECA), more cocoa has been ground in the EU than in the last three years. While the grinding figures for Q1 in 2015 and 2016 were declining, they have for the first time enjoyed a growth of 1.01% compared to the same period last year.

Exciting parallels

Grinding is once more approaching a level not seen since the first quarter of 2014. Three years ago, the grinding figures were much higher at 343,062 mt. Still, there are indications of exciting parallels. Interestingly, the grinding figures also rose by 1.01% in the first quarter of 2014 compared to 2013. In the course of the year, however, grindings dropped by 2.1% to a total of 1.30 million mt. For the producers, the markets in India, Venezuela, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia are currently of interest, where massive growth rates are being recorded.

AMSTERDAM/FRANKFURT. The grinding statistics from Europe and North America fall short of expectations. Last year’s prolonged summer weather has put off consumers from eating chocolate in Germany and concerns have been voiced over the mid-crop in the Côte d’Ivoire. Traders are, however, skeptical towards these and similar statements.
