Cocoa: Upswing in demand in Europe

AMSTERDAM/FRANKFURT. The grinding statistics from Europe and North America fall short of expectations. Last year’s prolonged summer weather has put off consumers from eating chocolate in Germany and concerns have been voiced over the mid-crop in the Côte d’Ivoire. Traders are, however, skeptical towards these and similar statements.

Grindings in Asia and North America fail to meet expectations

The Q4 grinds in Asia came as an absolute surprise to the market. As much as 208,900 mt of cocoa beans were ground – a 6.6% year-on-year increase. Analysts had initially projected a decline of 1.3%. With 780,956 mt the total grindings in Asia are the highest on record.

BONN. As the Association of German Confectionery Industry has recently reported cocoa bean grindings in Germany have risen nominally in the first quarter. Figures are also encouraging in Europe, North America and Asia.
