BONN. As the Association of German Confectionery Industry has recently reported cocoa bean grindings in Germany have risen nominally in the first quarter. Figures are also encouraging in Europe, North America and Asia.

Stable demand in Germany

Cocoa bean grindings reached 101,489 mt in Germany in Q1, a rise of nearly 2% over last year’s Q1 grindings. Demand for chocolate and other cocoa-related products remains stable. As the industry reports as much as ca. 220 million chocolate Easter rabbits have been produced this year, which is identical to last year’s production. About 52% are destined for domestic consumption, whereas 48% are shipped - mainly to Europe, the USA and Canada and Australia. Demand for sustainably produced cocoa clearly is on the rise in Germany. In 2018 as much as 62% of the confectionery sold contained sustainable cocoa.

Sharp increase in Asia

Q1 grindings in Europe have risen by 3.3% to 370,359 mt since last year. Grindings in North America rose by nearly 2% to 121,129 mt. These increases are, however, far outmatched by the rise in demand in Asia. The CAA reports of a robust demand situation, in which Q1 grindings have risen by 9.54% to 208,388 mt. However, the Association also points out that Q1 grindings have nominally decreased by 0.25% as compared with Q4 in 2018.

AMSTERDAM/FRANKFURT. The grinding statistics from Europe and North America fall short of expectations. Last year’s prolonged summer weather has put off consumers from eating chocolate in Germany and concerns have been voiced over the mid-crop in the Côte d’Ivoire. Traders are, however, skeptical towards these and similar statements.
