Cocoa: Germany set to increase market shares for sustainable production

BONN. With sales figures for sustainable cocoa surging in Germany the Association of the German Confectionary Industry (BDSI) has urged its members to invest further in sustainability in its most recently published report.

 

The focus

Sustainability will remain an important issue in 2018. The professional growing of sustainable cocoa beans and better living conditions for small growers and their families, especially in West Africa have taken center are the main concerns for Germany’s confectionary industry. These goals are to be achieved in close cooperation with all participants along the value-added chain. Economies with sustainable productions value good growing practices, a responsible handling of natural resources and most importantly of all working practices, which by no means exploit adults and children.

Ambitious aims

In 2017 the market share of sustainable cocoa production rose to 55% in the confectionery sold in Germany – a sharp year-on-year increase according to a recently conducted BDSI query amongst its members. Only a few years ago, it was extremely difficult for consumers to buy sustainable cocoa. In a survey conducted by the BDSI in 2011 the market shares were as low as 3%.

The Association responded in December 2017 with a sharp increase in its sustainability goals. Confectionery producers in Germany are now being urged to increase the shares of sustainable cocoa in sales to as much as 60% by 2020. Market shares are to amount to 75% in 2025. Although this aim is strongly supported by Germany’s producers success also depends on all parties involved in the value-added chain – from the governments in the producing countries right up to the consumers.
