Cocoa: New EU limits pose great challenge for the market

AMSTERDAM/ABIDJAN. With EU regulations concerning cocoa becoming more and more specific traders are confronted with ever increasing challenges. The International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) has, in addition, stimulated speculations over production in West Africa.

 

New EU limits are well intended, but hardly feasible

Cocoa has become a very profitable business for traders in Europe over the last few years. Demand from the confectionery industry is very high. The downside, however, is that the specifications concerning sustainability and quality are becoming increasingly diversified. Buyers pay close attention to certifications such as UTZ and demand for organic cocoa is on the rise. As of January, the following limits for cadmium will be mandatory for chocolate and cocoa powder:
