Butter: Subdued demand continues

BRUSSELS/BERLIN. Butter is being controversially discussed in Germany. Problem are the CO2 emmissions. Meanwhile, demand for bulk butter is still very subdued.

 The controversy

In Germany, the emmissions caused by butter are a matter of concern. As the data of the Freiburg Ökoinstitut shows, 1 kg of butter generates a CO2 equivalent of 24 kg. By comparison, it should be noted that the CO2 equivalent for 1 kg beef is 13 kg. A CO2 levy on butter has been in discussion for some time. In recent weeks, the discussion has also been fuelled by the announcement of the Council of Economic Wise Men that a levy should be introduced.
