TEHRAN. Iran’s cumin exports slumped by 86% to as little as 198 mt in March-June as compared with last year. Traders state that it is simply impossible to compete with prices in India. This is, however, not the only reason why exports have slumped.

Export value slashed by 91%

Iran exported 198 mt of cumin worth USD 399,000 between 20 March and 20 June. This is an 86% decline on the 1,464 mt exported in the same period last year. In terms of value exports are even 91% down on the USD 4.388 million generated last year. Traders attribute this sharp decline to the increase in supplies in India, which is the leading producer. Iran ranks second as annual production ranges at 10,000 mt and spans an area of around 20,000 ha. For suppliers in Iran, it is simply impossible to compete with the attractive prices on offer
