LIMA/BRASÍLIA. After a weak start to the new year, Peruvian ginger exports improved in March. Meanwhile, growers in Brazil are expecting an increase in production.

March exports rise by 30%

Exports of fresh Peruvian ginger had a difficult start to 2025, with figures in January and February down on last year. However, March saw an upturn and exports recovered. According to fresh fruit, 2,671 mt of fresh ginger worth USD 5.74 million were shipped overseas last month, 30% more in volume and 17% more in value than in March 2024. The average export price fell to USD 2.15/kg compared to last year's price of USD 2.40/kg. The market experts also report that Peruvian ginger was exported to a total of 16 markets in March 2025. The USA accounted for the largest share with 1,802 mt worth USD 4.16 million, representing 69% of Peru's total exports for the month. The Netherlands followed with 371 mt or 13% of exports, with Spain in third place with 93 mt or 4%.

China and Peru are Brazil's biggest competitors

In Brazil, ginger prices have declined due to the high supply on the global market. Patrick Santana from the Brazilian company Santana Ginger told FreshPlaza that Europe is the most important export destination for the South American country. Large quantities went to the Netherlands in particular; importers there favour large-volume ginger. In addition to Europe, Brazilian suppliers are also increasingly trying to gain a foothold in the US market. The biggest competition comes from Peru and China – the latter is the world's largest exporter of ginger. Santana states that 2024 was a good year for Brazilian growers, who were able to make high profits. The situation only changed when global supply increased and exceeded demand. The large volumes from China in particular put pressure on Brazilian prices. Market players in Brazil expect production to increase by 10-20% in 2025.

Sharp rise in EU imports

EU ginger imports since the beginning of the year have increased significantly by almost 50% compared to the same period last year. The most important supplier is China, which has more than doubled its shipments, followed by India (+21.6%) and Vietnam (+91.8%). Côte d'Ivoire and Peru also recorded significant increases in exports to the EU, while deliveries from Nigeria and the UK fell sharply. The most important customers in the EU were Germany, which increased its imports by more than 141% to 708 mt, the Netherlands and Belgium.
