TEHRAN. Although the impact of the floods and hailstorms recorded in the Khorasan Razavi province in April are limited, the cumin market in Iran is struggling with the coronavirus crisis and economic problems.

Rain offsets damage

In the region of Bardeskan City, which is production hub for black and green cumin in the Khorasan Razavi Province, hailstorms and floods are, for instance, estimated to have damaged 400 hectares. And yet, the farmers are highly satisfied with this year’s production. Some have witnessed a rise in yields. This positive development is attributed to the rains in winter and in spring that prompted production to jump by 20-25% in the region.

Harvesting is in fact in full swing and has prompted a 10% decline in prices last week. In addition to this, suppliers are struggling with exchange rate fluctuations and subdued demand in the export and in the domestic market. Prices have declined by EUR 2.00-2.68 per kg over the last four weeks.
