Butter: surprising twist in demand

KEMPTEN/BRUSSELS. Contrary to expectations demand for butter is surprisingly strong in Germany. EU exports are still experiencing a record high, whereas EU quotations range on a less welcome level.

No January slump

Demand has taken a surprising turn in Germany. While retailers normally tend to require less butter in January, the anticipated slump in demand has failed to materialise this year. Table butter quotations range at EUR 5.80-5.94/kg (USD 6.32-6.47) at the Southern German Butter and Cheese Exchange in Kempten. Demand for bulk butter has also remained good and older stocks have been sold off. Less milk is available for producing butter as cheese manufactures are buying up large volumes, bulk butter is quoted at EUR 5.35-5.50/kg (USD 5.83-5.99/kg) in Kem
