Butter: industry adapts to new situation

KEMPTEN/BRUSSELS. After giving the dairy industry a shock in January, the foot-and-mouth disease no longer dominates German headlines. EU butter prices are still highly unattractive. Yet, exports performed rather well in 2024.

Industry adapts to new status in Germany

As no new cases have emerged since the foot-and-mouth disease was detected in a buffalo herd in the state of Brandenburg on 10 January, the issue has disappeared from German headlines. Germany may have lost its status as “free from foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination” by the World Organisation for Animal Health, yet the industry has adapted to this new situation, with additional paperwork being required for exports to several countries.
