FRANKFURT/LODZ. Market observers agree that the butter market in Germany is proving rather mysterious at the moment. Although the hot and dry summer left the farmers with insufficient feed supplies for the winter and demand was set to revive after the summer holidays, the prices for butter have taken a surprisingly mixed turn.

Drastic decline in price

Only two weeks ago, the limited feed supplies and the end of the summer holidays had prompted market players to expect rising prices. The market is, however, instead experiencing a drastic decline. While butter in 25 kg blocks was trading well above 5.50 EUR/kg in August, prices have now dropped as low as 5.10 EUR/kg in Germany and prices in Poland to 5.20 EUR/kg. Similar tendencies can be observed at the Eurex and at the Global Dairy Trade.
