FRANKFURT. While low retail prices fail to impress consumers in Germany, the market is deeply concerned over the developments in the market for bulk butter.

Normal retail demand

The price reductions for packet butter have failed to impress consumers in Germany as normal volumes are being shipped to the retailers. Contrary to this, the situation was quite different at the beginning of February when shipments peaked because the retailers had to refill their stores.

Prices are spiraling downwards

As storage facilities are becoming limited concerns are spreading in the market for bulk butter. Enquiries for the second quarter are steadily declining and negotiations are rather taking place for the third and fourth quarter. Although some buyers are trying to secure long-term stable prices, most prefer to wait for further price declines. Market players reckon that prices will most certainly drop below 4.00 EUR/kg. The situation is slowly but surely becoming dramatic since the butter needs to be stored, which costs money and the facilities are becoming limited. Contracted butter is not always been shipped in time.
