BERLIN. According to a recently issued statement by the Association of the German Dairy Industry, Brexit and contract negotiations were the key issued discussed at the 10th Milk Forum in Berlin. The forum reflects the challenges the industry is confronted with.

Milk production better than expected in 2018

Despite the drought witnessed in some parts of Germany, production has increased. The farmers shipped as much as 31.7 million mt of milk to the dairies, a rise of 1.5% over 2017. At the same time, the farmgate prices for conventional milk declined by 5% to 34.37 Cents/kg (0.4% fat, 3.4% protein). CEO Peter Stahl is optimistic about this year’s developments for skimmed milk powder in declaring that “after the prices reached a historic low, the EU reacted swiftly and with great caution in buying large volumes of skimmed milk powder … I hope that we do not need this intervention in future”.

Dairies in Germany to react swiftly to Brexit

The contracts negotiated between the producers and the dairies are a great challenge faced by the industry. As Stahl, however, points out some progress has been made. He does not think that compulsive regulations on volume and price should be introduced as he does not think that this would work.

The further development of the market is closely tied in with Brexit as the UK will most certainly remain an important trading partner for milk. Stahl, however, observes that “any delays to Brexit with any definite objective or agreement spells a longer period of uncertainty for all market players in Germany and Europe.” He is, however, convinced that “the dairies in Germany will react quickly in developing appropriate strategies”.
