Walnuts: Rainfall threatens Hungarian walnut crop

SACRAMENTO/BUDAPEST. While it was still too dry in many parts of Hungary in April, many walnut farmers now want a lower precipitation rate.

The persistent rainfall in the Hungarian growing regions can quickly become a problem because the risk of mould has increased significantly. In addition to walnuts, the wine and poppy fields are also affected.

Experts are currently expecting an average crop this year in terms of quantity and quality, but much depends on whether the farmers were able to take timely measures to reduce the risk of mold.
