ISTANBUL/TEHRAN. According to the latest data from the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council, global pistachio production has increased by 9.1%. This is due not least to the record result in Turkey.

Turkish production up by 130.8%

Despite significantly smaller crop in the USA, Spain and Italy, global pistachio production increased in the 2024/2025 season. One of the reasons for this is the record crop in Turkey. According to the latest report from the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council, a total of 1.168 million mt of in-shell pistachios were harvested worldwide, an increase of 9.1% compared to the previous year. Thanks to carry-over stocks from the 2023/2024 season of 163,900 mt, the total availability this season is 1.332 million mt (+5.7%).

The USA usually contributes around half of the annual production result. However, as the current season is an “off-year”, the result of 503,700 mt is around 25.7% behind last year. Yields were also lower in Spain (-25.0% to 4,500 mt) and Italy (-31.7% to 2,800 mt). Although a record crop of 9,000 mt of pistachios is expected in Spain for the 2025/2026 season, market players are concerned about the supply of the EU market due to geopolitical tensions – pistachio production within the European Union is far from sufficient to meet demand and significant price increases were already noticeable this season.

Iranian pistachio production exceeded original expectations and is currently estimated at 200,000 mt (+19% year-on-year). However, extreme heat and drought are said to have ensured that the proportion of small pistachios is comparatively high and that many of the shells have not opened. In addition, the record crop expected for this season was achieved in Turkey, with production increasing by 130.8% year-on-year to 415,500 mt of in-shell pistachios. According to reports, the high demand for Dubai chocolate in the first few months of the new season in particular caused a massive increase in domestic demand, which is said to have risen by 40% compared to what was usual in previous years.

EU imports on the rise

EU imports of pistachios have also risen again this year. Since the beginning of this year (1 January - 6 April 2025), a total of 44,368 mt of shelled and unshelled pistachios worth EUR 417.287 million have been imported into the EU; this represents a 7% increase in import volume compared to the same period last year, while higher average prices ensured that the import value even increased by an impressive 28.3%. At 39,261 mt, around 88.5% of pistachios shipped in the above-mentioned period came from the USA and imports were up 5% year-on-year. Turkey (+45.6% to 1,650 mt) and Iran (-46.3% to 1,450 mt) followed at a considerable distance.

The main buyer within the EU is Germany (+8.9% to 16,920 mt), followed by Italy (+58.4% to 7,840 mt) and Spain (+48.7% to 6,870 mt).
