Walnuts: objective production estimate takes market by surprise

SACRAMENTO. The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has recently issued the objective production estimate for walnuts in California. Somewhat surprisingly, NASS estimates that in shell production...

...will exceed 705,000 mt, which would be a 20% rise over the 590,000 mt produced last year. Initial estimates, however, ranged 51,000 mt lower. As yields are expected to rise walnuts will most certainly be smaller in size this season, meaning that the prices for jumbos may rise.
