PARIS/SACRAMENTO. The spring estimates for the 2017 French walnut production already reckoned with a smaller production than last year. Now, market participants report a 15–20% lower output.

France

This spring, the experts at the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council still estimated French walnut production at 35,000 mt in 2017 – 1,000 mt less than 2016. Indeed, market participants now report that frost has led to a total decrease of 15–20%, above all in South West France. Cold temperatures during the flowering period in spring have led to losses of up to 50%. South East France paints a different picture, with yields increasing by around 15%; however, the walnuts are somewhat smaller this year.
