SACRAMENTO. US exports may have been booming this season. Buying interest is, however, declining now.

2017/18 production

California witnessed a bumper crop of 618,000 mt in shells in 2016. According to the International Dried Fruits and Nuts Council (INC) this year’s production is to jump by another 3% to 636,000 mt. Global production is also set to grow. Although a decline is expected in China, it will be offset by an increase in the Ukraine and Chile.

US exports

The USA has so far shipped almost 355,000 mt this season, about 21% more than last year. June shipments, however, show a year-on-year decrease. Due to the promising production estimates buyers prefer to wait for the new crop and profit from lower prices. Exports to Europe increased by 25%. The main buyers are Germany, Spain and Italy.
