SOFIA. In Bulgaria, the harvest is about to start in September. Oversea buyers, however, need to be patient.

Demand is high

Contrary to last year, expectations are very good. Although the yields are expected to be much better, the season is likely to start with very high prices. Market players reckon that the lack of carry-over stocks will push up the prices in the first few weeks of the season. Drying is crucial to avoid mould. And to allow the nuts sufficient time to dry the first shipments cannot take place before the end of September.

There is a strong demand from Romania and Greece as several processors are looking for additional supplies to crack and re-export. The Ukraine is the biggest walnut producer in Europe, but the harvest will start as late as October.
