Sultanas: Farmers want to raise prices

MANISA. In almost six weeks, the fasting month of Ramadan will begin. For the Turkish dried fruit market, it is probably the last chance to get business moving again.

Convincing quality

The flowering vines have survived the high-risk frost period, and no significant damage has been reported until now. Accordingly, the production outlook is good: Once more this year, a sultana crop of about 300,000 mt should be possible.

The prices are relatively stable, and the level can probably be maintained until the end of the season. However, market players cannot rule out a slight increase in prices to a level comparable to Chinese or Iranian produce. Farmers are convinced that the higher quality of Turkish sultanas will be able to assert itself against the competition, even at a slightly higher price. Despite the upcoming holidays, traders do not expect significantly higher domestic demand.

Prices for deliveries from the new crop are already available upon request. On average, they are around 1,300 USD/mt FOB Izmir, but the prices can surely still be renegotiated depending on the purchase volume.

Export details

Exports since the beginning of the season total almost 180,000 mt, around 40% more than last season at this time. The most important buyer is the UK with more than 42,500 mt. Germany has increased its imports by almost two thirds, and is therefore in second place.

Overall, the export figures are more than satisfactory for Turkey, but many deliveries to foreign countries are currently running through long-term contracts. There are hardly any prompt requests at the moment. Nonetheless, surpluses at the end of the season are not expected.
