MANISA. The first signs of fruit development can be seen on the vines, and despite the snow in the last few days, a good sultana production can still be expected for 2017.

So it is high time for the farmers to spread a few rumours. There is no need to worry about the quality of the grapes, but the yield is supposed to be lower than last year. It would not really be surprising if the yields were lower after the good crop in 2016, but it still remains to be seen how the yields will develop.

Far ahead
Exports are still going well and are about 40% above last year's figures, not least thanks to the lower average price, which is a good 26% lower than last year at this time due to the better availability.

Organic wants to be sold
In the conventional sultanas area, the prices have already been stable for a while; smaller fluctuations are mainly caused by changes in the exchange rates. In contrast, the prices for organic sultanas are exhibiting a slow but steady downwards trend, since there are still enough commodities available on the market that farmers and traders want to get rid of.

The school project, for which the government already purchased several tons of sultanas in the last few years, is supposed to continue in 2017/18 and be further developed. At least 5,000 mt, ideally even 10,000 mt, are supposed to be purchased for this project. The farmers hope that this will bring about higher prices; however, the actual sales for the school project in the last two years were rather sobering compared to the expectations.
