VILLERS-ÉCALLES. The Nutella plant in French Normandy has now been on strike for almost a week.

The factory in Villers-Écalles in northern France normal produces about 600,000 mt of Nutella glasses per day, as much as a quarter of Ferrero’s global production volume. As a consequence of the strike, production has now dwindled. And not only the production of the spread has come to a standstill, said Fabrice Canchel of the Force Ouvrière (FO) trade union. The production of the Kinder Bueno chocolate bars has also been affected.

As much as 160 of the 400 factory employees are on strike, union representatives reported on Monday. Among other things, deliveries to and from the plant are being blocked, which is why the supply of ingredients is very much limited. The management has denounced the blockade as "illegal" in an internal email. The staff is demanding a wage increase of 4.5% and a bonus of EUR 900.

The plant belonging to the Italian confectionery group Ferrero had hit the headlines in February. At that time there was talk of unspecified quality problems.
