Spice market update: high cardamom prices put buyers off

GUJARAT. Weekly market update from India on cumin, coriander and turmeric, chilli, cardamom and black pepper along with a price list for more than 70 products.

Cumin

Prices have continued to slide for cumin. Expectations, however, differ as some are actively seeking contracts for March and April in anticipation of further declines, whereas others reckon that the market will level off very soon. Although buyers in the Gulf States normally purchase large volumes well before Ramadan, they have cut purchases by 70% this year. As carry-over supplies are expected to be low and adverse weather conditions have been forecast for February the new crop may very well be smaller in size.
