Saffron: price dumping in Iran

TEHRAN. Saffron production has risen notably in Iran over the last few years. Market players are, however, very much concerned over the developments in price. Speculators have largely shaped the market this season.

Speculators push down prices

Drought has prompted a rise in production in Iran in recent year, especially in the eastern provinces of the country and in Khorasan Razavi. The farmers have, however, experienced high price volatility. To make matters worse speculators have purchased large volumes of the new crop just after the harvest at dumping prices. Consequently, the domestic market is left with unsustainably low prices prompted by the increase in production and by speculative buying.
