Saffron: Price development takes market by surprise

TEHRAN. Harvesting will start in October. Market players are, however, rather caught up with the surprising development in price. In addition, consumers within Iran are increasingly viewing saffron as a luxury item.

Currency problems impact export market

Market players in Iran had initially anticipated a rise in prices over the last few weeks. They had reckoned that the celebrations for Muharram, which mark the beginning if the Islamic New Year in many states, would push up demand and drive up prices. Prices, however, failed to rise and remained largely stable instead. There is only one noted exception as the increase in export demand prompted the prices for Poushal saffron to rise.
