TEHRAN. Although Iran is the leading producer of saffron, the country only accounts for 11.5% of global exports. Problems are inadequate packaging, bulk sales and a lack of brands as well as the lack of attention the government pays to the agricultural sector. Traders state that exports will decline further, unless the situation improves.

Exports set to decline further

The country exported 280 metric tonnes worth USD 351 million between April 2018 and April 2019. In the global market, however, exports range at USD 218 billion. China accounts for 18.4% of all exports and India for 14.5%. Iran’s main export destinations include the United Arab Emirates and Spain. These countries import bulk shipments from Iran and resell saffron in their own name. If the industry fails to respond to the challenges of inadequate packaging and bulk sales the country will lose further shares in the export market.
