Saffron: illegal trading activities weigh on market

TEHRAN. Although production costs have risen sharply, the current prices for saffron are too low for the farmers. Market players are certain that if these prices persist production will decline. One problem are illegal trading activities.

Illegal trading activities pose a threat to producers

Official figures indicate that Iran produced 430 metric tonnes of saffron in 2019. Unofficial figure, however, range higher at 500 metric tonnes. Due to contradicting data on smuggling, it is impossible to determine the exact export volumes from Iran over the last few months. Estimates, however, clearly illustrate that overseas shipments have declined. Since smuggling undoubtedly is on the rise the problem is that no jump in exports can be recorded and it is, therefore, impossible that prices will be given a lift
