TEHRAN. Market players in Iran are growing increasingly concerned over the difficult situation the export market is presented with. Smuggling saffron illegally to other countries is the only alternative most companies have.

Legal exports are hardly possible

In the first three months of the Iranian new year (20 March-20 June) exports declined by 15% to around 40 metric tonnes. The decline was mainly triggered by problems relating to financial transactions. In addition, the summer break in Europe caused a further decrease in exports. Harvesting will start in October and production is set to rise by 15-20% to 500 metric tonnes.
