Saffron: good reputation at risk

TEHRAN. In response to demand from Chinese buyers, machine-pressed and dried saffron is again increasingly being produced, putting the good reputation of the high-quality, hand-dried product at risk. The traders and traditional producers are upset about this development.

Quality before appearance

A few years ago, the production of so-called "pressed saffron" was stepped up as Chinese buyers showed great interest. However, this subsided again when the country was hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, but is now reviving. Iranian traders do not have a good opinion of this product as it could jeopardise the reputation of the good quality of Iranian saffron.
