Saffron: exports decline by 13%

TEHRAN. Iran exported as little as 115 metric tonnes of saffron between 21 March and 21 November 2019. This is down 13% since 2018. Traders state that export barriers and problems urgently need to be resolved.

Legal trading is not attractive enough

Businesses conducting legal trading activities are exposed to unfair competition. Problem is that traders are forced to conduct business over the NIMA system, which renders legal exporting activities more expensive, whereas smugglers and overseas traders can easily undercut these prices. In addition, they also tend to offer lower quality saffron and naturally do not pay custom duties. The damage to the market is immense.
