BOCA RATON, FLORIDA. More than 1,300 food industry professionals from 63 countries gathered in Boca Raton, South Florida for the 38th World Nut and Dried Fruit Congress.

Production forecasts for nuts and dried fruit
As discussed by the industry leaders during the roundtables of the congress, the worldwide nut production is estimated at 7.5 million mt without shell (excluding pistachios in shell). This represents an increase of 5% over the previous season. It is far too early to estimate the final result. The most significant increases since 2018/19 are currently expected for hazelnuts, walnuts and almonds with increases of 14%, 13% and 11% respectively.

According to initial estimates, worldwide peanut production of 40.5 million mt (in shell) is expected for 2019/20, around 1.2 million mt more than in 2018/19.

The volume of dried fruit produced worldwide is forecast at 3.2 million mt, an increase of 3% over 2018/19 due to the expected increase in production of prunes (14%), dates (8%) and apricots (7%).

The focus on sustainability proved to be a big hit at the roundtables, as did plant nutrition and healthy snacks as a way to encourage the consumption of nuts and dried fruit.

The next INC Congress will be held from 28 to 30 May 2020 in Dubai, UAE.
