FRESNO/TEHRAN. Shipments have broken all records for pistachios in the US. India will be a key player in the international market and crop damages are anticipated in Iran.

US shipments exceed 1 billion pounds

US exports have finished the season with a remarkable performance. Exports stand 43% higher than last year at 931 million pounds. China has not only nearly doubled shipments from the US but also accounts for 33% of total exports. Germany has also upped shipments by an impressive 69%. Contrary to this, shipments to Turkey have declined by 7%. At 250 million pounds domestic shipments have also exceeded last year’s 249 million pounds. Total shipments have climbed to a record 1.18 billion pounds, which is 31% up on last year. As the Administrative Committee for Pistachios estimates the adjusted inventory at 1.36 billion pounds the estimated remaining marketable inventory stands at 184 million pounds for 2023/2024.

High hopes on India

Despite witnessing a 20% downturn in shipments to India in 2023/2024, high hopes are placed on the country as pistachios are gaining popularity as a healthy snack in the upper and middle classes. India is also set to overtake Japan as third largest economy by 2030. After last year’s record crop California is preparing for an off year in terms of production. Harvesting is underway with reports stating that the quality of the nuts is excellent but assessments on crop size and yields still need to be issued.

Iran also has high hopes on India and the Iran Pistachio Association reports that shipments to India have been strong in the second half of the season. The Far East, most notably China, gained in importance in June and July as the shipments to this region surpassed the volumes shipped to the CIS countries. Monthly exports, in fact, exceeded expectations in July as they hit 10,000 mt (22 million pounds) for in-shell equivalent pistachios, which is three times as high as in July last year. Total exports have climbed to 125,000 mt (276 million pounds) for September 2023 to July 2024 and the remaining inventory is presently estimated at 52,000 mt (115 million pounds).

Crop damages in Iran

For this year’s crop IPA concedes that the initial estimate of 190,000 mt will need to be downgraded as excessively hot weather in summer coupled with widespread power cuts in the country, which interrupted irrigation, have caused extensive damage. The late bloom in spring has also contributed to a delayed start to the harvest season, which only started in mid-September. Prices have risen in recent weeks but still stand much lower than in the past two years.
