MADRID/SACRAMENTO. The media in Spain reports that acreage rose sharply by 30% last year. Californian meanwhile witnessed three record crops over the last five years.

30% increase in Spain

According to a report issued by the Ministry of Agriculture in Spain, bearing-tree acreage rose from 15,847 ha to 20,415 ha in 2018, which is an increase of around 30%. Production may therefore rise to around 7,000 mt. Spain intends to profit from the growing pistachio market and may well continue to invest in new orchards.

"Off-Year" in California

According to the latest report issued by Anderson Exports acreage has also risen in California in recent years. In 2014 (233,150 mt), 2016 (406,900 mt) and 2018 (447,700 mt) the production has moved to new records. Contrary to this, drought caused production to decline to 122,500 mt in 2015.

Production estimates issued by the University of California at the beginning of May ranged at 340,000-365,000 mt for 2019. This year is an “off-year" since yields declined every two years as the trees need recovery. In addition, it should be noted that the heavy rains and hailstorms recorded last month may certainly have an impact on production.
