BRUSSELS/TEHRAN. EU imports surged to record high levels for pistachios in the first half of the year. US shipments have basically flooded the market, much to the detriment of Iran.

EU spends 73% more on pistachios

EU inshell pistachio imports nearly doubled to 64,654 mt in the first six months of the year, the highest ever recorded. In terms of value imports have even surged by 73% to EUR 430 million (USD 468 million) as compared with the EUR 248 million (USD 270 million) generated in the same period in 2023. Main driver is the USA as leading supplying country. Imports from here have more than doubled.

Shipments from Iran have risen by a comparatively moderate 12% and Turkey has witnessed an 86% surge in shipments to the EU. Attention should also be paid to Afghanistan as shipments from here have surged to incredible volumes this year. The country serves as an alternative route for suppliers in Iran keen to avoid financial losses by smuggling pistachios. Germany accounts for 37% (24,000 mt) of the EU’s total imports, followed by Belgium with 17% (11,000 mt) and Spain with 15% (8,000 mt)

Prices at three-year low in Iran

With the new crop about to arrive prices have dipped to levels not seen since April 2020. Iran’s Pistachio Association (IPA) is calling for trade barriers to be lifted. Besides the international sanctions that render payments difficult and the complex exchange system within in Iran exporters are also confronted with the Red Sea crisis. As pipelines are filled with US pistachios in the EU and Asia the country exclusively shipped pistachios to CIS countries, India and the Middle East in May. If initial IPA forecasts prove true Iran will produce 200,000 mt of pistachios in 2024/2025, of which roughly 120,000 mt will be exported, ending inventories for the current crop year are estimated at 85,000 mt. In July, IPA will issue an official production estimate.
