Pistachios: competitive market

TEHRAN. Iran has experienced supply squeezes and high prices over the last few years. This year, the situation is, however, completely different. Although market players state that the country can easily compete with Turkey or Afghanistan, the US is a completely different matter.

Improved production

Although sanctions and currency fluctuations are still in place this year, production has very much improved. Heavy rainfall in March and April resolved any drought-related problems and production has increased. Market players reckon that the competition from Turkey and Afghanistan poses no real challenge as Iran has 60 big traditional customers. In addition, data presented by the Iranian Nut Exporters’ Union states that Iran shipped around 44,300 metric tonnes of pistachios and pistachio kernels between 21 March 2018 and 21 March 2019. On
