Exports up 27%
US pistachio exports continue the positive trend of recent months. Since the beginning of the season, 258,028 mt of pistachios have been delivered to the domestic market and abroad, about 20% more than last year around this time. Exports accounted for 188,747 mt of this (+27%), while domestic demand increased by 17% to 9,042 mt.
Deliveries to Europe increased by 46%, not least thanks to the strong increase in imports to Germany (+62% to 19,057 mt) and Spain (+78%).
Demand in the Asian region has also changed, with India (+245% to 5,381 mt) and China (+17% to 49,690 mt) being important buyers this season.
Month-on-month, April exports increased by 50% to 20,416 mt, while domestic consumption rose by 17% to 9,042 mt. Spanish importers increased their imports last month by 255% to 1,027 mt, while Turkey imported 746 mt, about 50% less than in April 2018.

Import tariff for China rises to 45%
Although the import duty for US pistachios to China was already raised by 15% to 20% in the spring of 2018, the Chinese market is showing strong import growth. This is probably due not least to the disappointing pistachio harvest in Iran last year.
With the next wave of tariff increases, Chinese buyers of US pistachios will have to dig deeper into their pockets once again from 01.06.2019. In total, the import duty will rise to 45% - which corresponds to an increase of a further 25%. The import of almonds, soybeans and dried grapes will also be subject to higher import duties as of next month.
