BRUSSELS. As recent EU import statistics show China and Russia maintained their leading market positions in 2024. Another interesting trend is that shipments from Turkey have risen sharply.

EU importers spend less

EU pine nut imports have inched up a small bit in the past three years. In 2024 they ranged 3% higher than in 2023. In terms of value, however, a different picture has emerged. While EU importers still spent a total of EUR 220 million (USD 229 million) on shelled pine nuts in 2022, this figure dropped to 154 million (USD 160 million) in 2023. Although spending recovered to EUR 162 million (USD 160 million) in 2024, this is still a far cry from the amount spent two years before.

Upsurge in shipments from Turkey

China supplies as much as 77% of the EU’s total imports. Shipments from here, however, flatlined in 2024. The other leading suppliers for the EU are Russia, Turkey and Mongolia along with Kazakhstan. Imports from Russia, in fact, recovered by 2% last year. Turkey is sporting the most impressive growth rate as imports from here have more than doubled Contrary to this, imports from Mongolia and Kazakhstan have declined by 48% and 46% respectively. Germany accounted for as much as 48% of all EU imports in 2024, followed by Italy with 18% and the Netherlands with 13%.
