ATLANTA. Hurricane Michael left a trail of devastation in large parts of the USA last autumn. The pecan nut plantations in the US state of Georgia also suffered considerable damage.

Massive crop losses

As the US Department of Agriculture has reported in its current report dated 14 March, pecan nut production fell by 27% to 100,335 mt in 2018/19. In Georgia, Hurricane Michael caused massive crop damages, in Oklahoma and Texas heavy rainfall and flooding also had an impact. Due to weather-related delays, some farmers were still busy harvesting until the end of February. Now, most farmers have started planting new trees and replacing their irrigation systems.
