Mentha/ Mint: Proposed removal of madi Tax

GST supported Mentha/Mint farmers:

Mentha oil is most commonly used in medicines & culinary. According to experts, the implementation of 18% GST on government's cosmetic health products and food supplements has increased tremendously prices of Mentha oil. The year 2012, Mentha was the most favorable & profitable for farmers and the prices had reached US$37.5, but after that continuous decline and sold in US$9.37 – 12.5.

According to the Spice Board of India, an organization working on Mentha's farming and Mentha Oil market in India, the export of Mentha oil and related products from India was about 21,150 tonnes in year 2016, which is 16% of the total spice exports in the country. Mentha oil has increased in foreign countries because of the use of mentha oil in most allopathic medicines.

With GST being implemented, mentha oil business has increased by 30 to 40%. This year, the area of Mentha had decreased considerably, so there was a threat to the high level of mentha oil in the state. But due to the GST arrival, the medicines have been expensive, so the rate has gone beyond the thousand Indian currencies.

In Uttar Pradesh, sowing of Mentha is usually between January to March and the harvest is cut in June. Mentha oil is traded in the month of June-July. Mantha cultivation in Uttar Pradesh is mainly in Barabanki, Jaloon, Meerut, Faizabad, Ambedkar Nagar, Bahraich, Hardoi, Amethi and Sitapur areas.

Recently, a delegation of Uttar Pradesh Menthe Oil Association along with Barabanki MP Priyanka Singh Rawat met the Deputy Chief Minister of the state, Keshav Prasad Maurya, in which issues of mentha farmers were raised prominently. On this, the Deputy Chief Minister has assured to the delegation that soon Mantha Oil will be released from Mandi Tax in respect of increasing the income of Mentha farmers.
