Macadamias: Good demand and increase in acreage

CANBERRA. The harvest has started in Australia and the potential is there to achieve a new production record.

New record crop is possible

As the Australian Macadamia Society (AMS) has stated in its current report, this year's crop is expected to amount to 53,500 mt (in shell, 10% moisture). This is a 1% rise over last year. Harvesting is under way in the region around Bundaberg, on the east coast of Australia. The harvest season spans five to six months.

The summer months were dry and hot. Some macadamia nut growing areas were also affected, which may have a negative impact on the kernel size. It is still too early to determine the actual impact of the summer heat and lack of rainfall.

Acreage is being expanded

Global demand is on the rise. Countries such as Japan, Taiwan and the USA as well as Europe increased imports last year. However, AMS reports that the shipments to China have declined due to the increase in production there. Nevertheless, the stocks from the 2018 crop are very much limited.

In the past twelve months, the Australia has invested in enlarging production. It is estimated that an additional 2,000 hectares were planted with macadamia trees in 2018. Acreage is to rise by a similar scale this year.
