GUJARAT. The Indian agricultural sector is expected to grow by 4.1% this year. This is a considerable increase in comparison to last year as the sector only grew by 1.2%.

Precipitation greatly increased in the last monsoon period. Whereby precipitation decreased by 12% and 14% respectively in 2014/15 and 2015/16. Roughly 63.73 M ha have been sown in India this season, 6% more than last year.

Cumin
The new crop started arriving in the spot markets in Gujarat this week with daily arrivals reaching an average of 150-200 bags. Arrivals are expected to climb to as much as 3,000-5,000 bags in the peak arrival season in the middle of February. This is when traders expect the prices to drop dramatically. They have already started to decrease this week. Cumin, Grade A 99% traded on level of 2,800-2,740 USD/mt FOB this week.

Coriander
A cold wave is currently causing concerns over crop damages in Madhya Pradesh. The conditions of the crops are much more favourable in Gujarat and Rajasthan. Prices increased this week and coriander, 5% Eagle Split is currently on offer for 1,135 USD/mt FOB.

Turmeric
Market participants expect demand to improve and the quality of the new crop appears to be good. Prices should, therefore, increase. Offers for turmeric, Finger Salem Doubled are currently available for 1,292 USD/mt FOB.

Chili
Prices have once again risen marginally in India only shortly before the new crop is expected to arrive in the market and have now reached 1,700 USD/mt FOB for chili, S4 stemless. The arrival of the new crop should, however, considerably pressurise the prices. Especially since the quality and supply are reckoned to be very good.

Cardamom
Arrivals are currently limited and limited availability has caused the prices for cardamom, 8mm to climb to 21,250 USD/mt FOB.

Black pepper
The price for black pepper remained stable this week with offers for black pepper, 500 GL remaining unchanged at 10,750 USD/mt FOB. With the new crop slowly but surely becoming available nominal price drops are expected over the next few weeks.

Chickpeas
After the prices almost doubled in India last year, the market witnessed nominal decreases this week. Chickpeas, 42/44 mm, are currently being offered for 2,038 USD/mt FOB. Current crop estimates are ranging at 9 M mt, which is 2.5 M mt more than last year. A very good production is expected.
