GUJARAT. Extreme weather, erratic conditions and chaos are already severely affecting the crops in India. It is also extremely worrying that there are no solutions in sight. The market will definitely need to prepare for great changes.

Low production estimates are currently dominating the market for spices.

Cumin
Due to low sowing production is expected to drop by as much as 11% in Rajasthan. Things also do not look much better in Gujarat. The market in addition witnessed only few arrivals, which resulted in an increase in prices this week. Cumin Grade A 99% traded on a level of 2,705-2,770 USD/mt FOB this week.

Turmeric
The lack of demand has resulted in a marginal decrease in prices this week. Fewer arrivals also failed to support prices. Turmeric Salem Double Polished is currently trading for 1,179-1,183 EUR/mt FOB.

Coriander
The market witnessed dramatic price increases for coriander this week caused by a drop in sowing acreage in Rajasthan. Reports of crop loses in parts of Madhya Pradesh due to frost also supported prices. This week’s price level for coriander Eagle 5% Split is 1,050-1,108 EUR/mt FOB.

Cardamom
The prices for green cardamom increased considerably this week. It is estimated that production is to drop to 20,000 mt this year, which is 8,000 mt less than last year. Fewer arrivals and an upsurge in demand further supported prices. Analysts expect demand to continue on a high level and reckon that the market is in for more price increases this season.

Mustard seeds
The expected bumper crop resulted in nominal price decreases this week. Acreage is currently estimated at 7 m ha, which is an 11% increase as compared to last year. The weather is also highly favourable for the development of the crop. The hard winter in the North of India, however, prevented further price drops since the oils are buying mustard to meet demand. Price hikes are highly unlikely this season.
