ORDU. The Turkish market for hazelnuts has given European buyers a belated Christmas present.

A historic low in exchange rates for the Turkish Lira is letting the prices for foreign buyers drop even further. Hazelnut prices are currently at their lowest in the last six months.

Prices 20% cheaper
In spite of disappointing production figures for 2016, the prices for natural hazelnut kernels are 20% cheaper, that is 1.75 EUR/kg below the level of the preceding year. Demand in terms of exports has also declined considerably, which is connected to the drop in availability. Turkish traders are hoping that the Turkish Lira will soon be stable but no one can be certain of that.
