ORDU. The most recent crop estimates are causing euphoria on the hazelnut market, as together with the surpluses from the current season, there are no shortages in sight for 2017/18.

More than 700,000 mt

The average Turkish hazelnut production amounts to 600,000 mt for in shells, but for this year, unofficial predictions of 700,000-750,000 mt are already being made. And then there are the surplus stocks from the 2016 crop as well as a report that the fungal disease that had been affecting the trees in recent years is not occurring as often until now. This not only speaks for a good hazelnut crop in terms of quantity, but also for quality.

Exports are still going well. Since the beginning of the season, about 180,000 mt of hazelnuts were delivered abroad, and prices are maintaining the same level as last week.

Still no official predictions

For market players, the above-average production outlook suggests that the TMO will be supporting the hazelnut market once more with purchases in the new season. Under current conditions, both farmers and exporters will have a hard time demanding higher prices. It will get interesting again in the next few days, when the first official crop estimates will be announced this coming weekend during the International Nuts and Dried Fruits Congress.
