ORDU. As promised, the Turkish government will now intervene in the hazelnut market and will start with making intervention purchases this week.

Each farmer will have to decide for himself if it is really worth selling. Depending on the region of origin, the TMO (Toprak Mahsulleri Ofisi or Turkish Grain Board) is offering 10.00-10.50 TRY/kg for raw hazelnuts. This value is strongly oriented on the raw hazelnut prices until now, and the farmers' desired price of 15 TRY/kg is far out of reach.

Speculations and rumours
Market players assume that support from the government at this late time in the season will have only a limited effect on the prices. Based on rumours, there are speculations that the government wants to make it particularly unattractive for farmers to sell their raw commodities to the TMO. In addition to the comparatively low price level, farmers will not be allowed to deliver more than 1 mt of hazelnuts per delivery to the TMO. Moreover, the quality requirements for commodities that are stored by the TMO were outstandingly high in the past, and traders think that the 2016 crop might not be able to meet these requirements.

In contrast, it would be different if the government purchases would reach into the new season, since a time limit is not known until now. Despite the good yield predictions, intervention purchases totalling 20,000-30,000 mt at the beginning of the season would be a price-driving factor.
