Hazelnuts: The TMO is simply taking everything

ORDU. The TMO's loose requirements for hazelnut deliveries are making it particularly lucrative for farmers to hand over small or ageing hazelnuts.

The farmers benefit
Market players initially assumed that the commodities would have to fulfil similarly strict requirements as in the 2008/09 season. In reality, however, the requirements for the quality and size are significantly lower, so that the farmers can sell smaller and older hazelnuts to the TMO without much difficulty. This resulted in a price increase for hazelnut preparations. In addition, up to 3 mt are accepted per delivery.

Nothing is certain
While foreign buyers are hesitating in the background, the domestic market is relatively active due to the upcoming Ramadan. Things should quiet down again in a week or two. In particular, the extent to which the TMO will participate with purchases from the 2017 crop remains unclear. Nonetheless, the good crop expectations and existing contracts are allowing traders to remain relatively relaxed in view of the next few weeks.

A dangerous mix
Regardless of the developments in Turkey, a scandal is anticipated on the hazelnut market. Deliveries from Georgia and Italy were stretched with other nuts such as almonds or cashews, and even with peanuts. The latter in particular represents an elevated health risk for persons with allergies when they are not declared.
