ORDU. The TMO's final round of sales for the season has again prompted enquiries to exceed the volumes on offer. Nevertheless, the additional volumes are sufficient to...

...add pressure to the farmgate prices. Due to the stronger Turkish lira prices, however, range higher in the export market.

Limited buying for new crop

The lack of enquiries for spot purchases in Turkey and overseas has further stabilised prices. Market players reckon that many buyers are already covered. Demand for the new crop is also subdued as the lack of official estimates creates a lot of potential for speculations and carries risks. New crop estimates are not expected to be issued until early June once the Export Union has carried out new counts. Although a rise in prices is by no means guaranteed over the next few weeks, it cannot be ruled one the exporters have sold their TMO volumes.

Less demand expected in Italy

The record export volumes achieved this season are unlikely to be repeated in the new marketing year. Production is expected to decline back to more normal levels after last year's exceptional crop. Yields are, however, expected to be very good in Italy, which will have an impact in demand for shipments from Turkey. Last year, adverse weather conditions largely reduced production in Italy and boosted demand for imports from Turkey. The country has shipped around 285,000 metric tonnes of hazelnuts overseas this season so for, around 65,000 metric tonnes more than last year.
