SOFIA. Showers could prolong the pace of harvest. The smaller orchards are already selling.

BULGARIA. The smaller orchards in the country, having realized a few metric tons of hazelnuts in shell this season, are already selling. Since the organic hazelnut is offered in small quantities on the local market, on the background of a growing local demand, some orchards set a price of as high as 12.50 EUR/kg EXW. Even at such a price, the kernel is easily bought out by individual clients. Usually, organically offered nuts – certificate provided – are quickly sold out before Christmas, as during December’s celebration days, prices even increase more.

Hazelnuts: an irrigation system is what makes the difference sometimes

The most prominent years of the cultivation history of hazelnuts in Bulgaria are the recent ones since farmers allocate more land for the growth of the nut. Traditionally, the majority of nuts’ orchards throughout the country have been of walnuts. Climate conditions are among the reasons the scales to have gone in favor of walnuts since droughts hit hard hazelnut bushes, affecting the yield potential. As a result, to secure a well-matured nut, farmers use irrigation systems.

For long periods before harvest, throughout the general south regions, rains seldom fell, and as a result, the yield of the nut was affected. Some farmers already use irrigation systems to minimize the effects of dry periods and the results are worthy of the investment. Even more so since locally produced hazelnuts come in small quantities on a yearly basis.
